Downside, to fully experience a corset one must learn how to lace it good and tight. Obviously this complexity is an essential part of the fulfilment process, even if most often helping hands are not anywhere near.
The "door knob" method is a very old proven way to lace a corset. However tying tidy feminine knots in the back is not that easy and requires training.
Even worse, a messed up entangled knot will be troublesome to release and might require to cut the laces.
The once popular fan lacing alleviates the problem and creates a very appealing visual effect that remains noticeable under tight fitting clothes adding further sophisticated feminity.
Noticeable downside being that fan lacing can not achieve extreme tight lacing, requires a longer lace and remains difficult to implement on budget items. Each strap bears the tension of several laces (fan) and should be made very sturdy to withstand the stress.
Yes sisters, commodity comes at a price...
This video (sorry, very poor sound...) illustrates the basics of fan lacing:
Sewing/seamstress skills (plenty of tips and tricks available on interweb), corset makers supplies and a sewing machine can convert any lacing item to fan lacing.
Well not quite. Additional care should be taken with fine fabrics unable to withstand the stress of the straps anchor points.
