Pure mechanical solutions have relief valves while elaborate electronically controlled appliances use a resistor to sense the motor current and limit the supplied power. Two very interesting points for the tech savvy.

I won't exclude higher complexity modifications by means of software, just saying.

Pumps can be noisy and attract unwanted attention or be considered as nuisance.
